The project is the first physical result of a partnership the two companies signed earlier this year, agreeing to build charging networks together and share retail space across Sinopec's stations. BYD brings the charging technology and very high power output. Sinopec brings something BYD cannot easily build alone, a nationwide footprint of tens of thousands of existing fuel stations already on prime real estate.
That combination is the real story here. Finding land for new charging stations is one of the hardest parts of building EV infrastructure, and Sinopec already owns the land, in places drivers already go. Converting existing gas stations rather than building from scratch could let BYD scale up far faster.
