NEWS |DOST Davao is asking everyone, local governments, farmers, fishing groups, and regular households, to start saving water together as El Nino keeps drying up the region. They are offering two kinds of help. One is money, cash grants for communities who want to build their own water saving projects. The other is a free online tool called HazardHunterPH, which shows people which areas are most at risk so they can prepare early instead of waiting for a crisis.

The danger is real and it is not just about running out of water today. If too much water gets pulled from underground, saltwater can seep in and ruin that water source for good, not just for this dry season, but permanently. Farmers and fishing groups would be hit hardest, since groundwater is usually their backup plan once the rain stops. The grant money comes from a national science fund, and it already goes to cooperatives, schools, and local governments building their own small water projects.

BMN sees something different happening here compared to how disaster help usually works. Normally, government waits until a crisis hits, then responds. This time, the tools and the money are already available before things get worse, and ordinary people are being trusted to use them.

Here is the part worth paying attention to. These tools are not actually exclusive to Davao. The same grants and the same hazard mapping tool are available to every region in the country, DOST has offered them nationwide for years. So the real question is not why only Davao is getting this push.

It is why it takes a public appeal like this one before people even find out these tools exist at all, and how many other regions have the exact same help sitting unused simply because nobody told them about it yet.
