Senior Distributed Systems Engineer
Company: Banana Media Network · Location: Manila, Philippines / Remote · Type: Full-time · Salary: ₱180,000–₱280,000/month
Banana Media Network is looking for a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer to design, build, and operate highly scalable backend infrastructure for millions of users.
This is a true all-in-one leadership role. You will act as the entire IT department—owning everything from bare-metal hardware, networking, and OS tuning, to software architecture, data analytics, QA automation, security, and project delivery. You are the single point of accountability for the entire technology stack.
Core Software Engineering & Development:
Design and deploy highly available distributed backend systems and microservices.
Build scalable, low-latency APIs using Go, Rust, Java, or TypeScript.
Design PostgreSQL schemas, replication strategies, and Redis caching layers.
Build high-throughput data pipelines with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or NATS.
Write clean, well-documented, production-grade code.
System Architecture & Infrastructure (DevOps/SRE):
Architect hybrid infrastructure spanning on-premise data centers and public cloud.
Deploy and scale containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes in production.
Implement CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi).
Tune Linux kernels, I/O schedulers, NUMA, and memory for extreme performance.
Manage the full hardware lifecycle: racking, cabling, provisioning, firmware updates, and decommissioning of enterprise servers (Dell, HPE, Supermicro) and network switches.
Data Analytics & Business Intelligence:
Build ETL/ELT pipelines for real-time and batch analytics.
Develop dashboards to track system KPIs, user behavior, and capacity planning.
Implement data quality checks and ensure consistency across distributed storage.
Quality Assurance & Test Engineering (QA):
Build test automation frameworks (unit, integration, end-to-end).
Execute performance, load, and stress testing to validate scalability.
Implement chaos engineering to proactively identify weaknesses.
Manage bug tracking, defect triage, and release validation.
Establish quality gates within the CI/CD pipeline.
Security Engineering (SecOps):
Implement encryption, IAM, RBAC, and TLS/SSL across all layers.
Conduct vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security audits.
Harden OS, containers, and networks against OWASP and CIS benchmarks.
Design disaster recovery and multi-region failover plans.
Monitor threats, manage patching, and ensure data privacy compliance.
Project Management & Technical Leadership:
Own the full SDLC from requirements gathering to production delivery.
Translate business goals into actionable technical roadmaps.
Manage sprint planning, task prioritization, and resource allocation.
Lead architecture reviews and make strategic technology decisions.
Document system designs, runbooks, and operational procedures.
Production Support & Incident Management:
Serve as primary on-call escalation for critical incidents.
Perform root-cause analysis across application, OS, network, and hardware.
Implement observability, monitoring, and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
Provide Tier-3 support for user-facing issues requiring code or infrastructure fixes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience at massive scale with millions of concurrent users.
Proven ability to wear multiple hats in a high-ownership environment.
Deep experience with multi-region or disaster-tolerant architectures.
Familiarity with data center operations: power/cooling, structured cabling, physical security.
Background in eBPF, DPDK, or kernel-level networking for low-latency workloads.
Strong communication skills to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
